Win one of four romantic Pearson English Readers in celebration of Valentine’s day.

We’ve been talking a lot on this blog lately about encouraging extensive reading—or reading for pleasure. And what better way to inspire a love of reading by celebrating with a Valentine’s day themed giveaway?! But first, since many of our non-native English-speaking readers may not know about the tradition of Valentine’s day, let me explain. Every year on 14 February, romantics around the world celebrate Valentine’s day by exchanging cards and gifts like chocolate, jewelry and flowers. This tradition possibly dates back to the Roman festival of Lupercalia, the start of Spring. There are also several legends related to St. Valentine, according to Wikipedia:

“St. Valentine’s Day began as a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus. Several martyrdom stories were invented for the various Valentines that belonged to February 14, and added to later martyrologies. A popular hagiographical account of Saint Valentine of Rome states that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire. According to legend, during his imprisonment, he healed the daughter of his jailer, Asterius. An embellishment to this story states that before his execution he wrote her a letter signed “Your Valentine” as a farewell.” (“Valentine’s Day”, n.d”)

No one really knows for sure what spurred this romantic tradition but we’ll use it as a reason to celebrate English learning!
