Depending on where you live or visit, you’ll be exposed to different dialects of the English language. Each part of the world has its own set of slang word, which can make learning English more difficult, as most of this vocabulary won’t be found in your study resources or even a dictionary. So, here are 10 common English slang words and phrases and what they mean:

1. Dunno is an abbreviated form of “I don’t know”
2. Turf it is an expression for throwing something away
3. To knock something means that the speaker is criticising that thing
4. Hanging out refers to relaxing/killing time somewhere
5. Wheels can refer to someone’s car, bike or other vehicle
6. A tad is another way to say “just a little” or “slightly”
7. Your pal would mean someone who is your friend
8. Nippy weather would be cold or chilly weather
9. Psyched can signify being very excited about something
10. Hoops refers to the game of basketball

While these are just a handful of the hundreds – if not thousands – of English slang words, it’s likely that you’ll regularly hear different terms and phrases on a daily basis.
